175th birthday party canceled
Saturday’s celebration at Waterworks Park to honor Fairfield’s 175th birthday has been canceled due to inclement weather, 175th committee member Terry Baker announced Wednesday afternoon.
The Facebook page “Fairfield celebrates 175 years” posted the reason the committee decided to cancel the fireworks and the other activities.
“We have been informed by the pyrotechnic experts that, due to the rain from last week and the expected rains this week and Saturday, it will be too wet to shoot off fireworks this weekend,” the post read.
The fireworks are launched from holes dug into the ground. The post explained that if the holes get wet, the fireworks would be ruined.
“The ground is so saturated right now that any holes that are dug immediately fill with water,” the post read.
The 175th birthday party was going to include food vendors, a sand volleyball tournament, a dunk tank, tours of Bonnifield Log House, kids’ activities and a performance by The East of Omaha Band.
The fireworks intended for Saturday night will be saved and added to the fireworks display planned for Independence Day 2015.
Fairfield was planning to celebrate its 175th birthday with fireworks and the other activities on July 5, but those were postponed until Saturday due to rain.
