Iowa boys’ basketball postseason pairings have been announced for Class 1A and Class 2A.

The Pekin Panthers (15-1) have drawn a first round bye and have been placed in Class 1A District 10. Pekin will host its first game at 8 p.m. on Feb. 20 in Packwood. The winner of Seymour (3-13) and Melcher-Dallas (3-14) will be Pekin’s opponent. Pekin, which will certainly be favored to win its first playoff game, would then play the winner of Wayne, Corydon (11-6) at Moulton-Udell (8-8).

Van Buren (15-2) was placed in the same district as Pekin, just in the bottom portion of the bracket. The Warriors, who also earned a first round bye, will play at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 in Packwood against either Sigourney (3-14) or Moravia (1-15). A Van Buren win would place them in a matchup against either Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment (2-13) or Twin Cedars (12-6).

This is where it gets interesting. If the Panthers and Warriors both win their initial two games, they will face off Feb. 27 in Bloomfield for the district title. The Warriors made it to the state championship game in baseball this summer and made their first ever playoff appearance in football this fall. Pekin is a senior laden team, and a game against Van Buren is certainly a juicy matchup to consider when looking at the playoffs brackets.

In Class 2A, Cardinal (7-9) will play against Pella Christian (7-10) Feb. 17 in Albia. The winner of that matchup will play PCM, Monroe (13-4) Feb. 20 in Albia.

Fairfield, which is in Class 3A, will find out who it plays in the first round on Monday. The Trojans have been placed in District 12 with Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison and Keokuk. This means Fairfield will play one of these teams in both the first and second round of the playoffs.

If Fairfield were to win its district, it would then play Grinnell, Pella, Washington or Williamsburg in the sub-state game on March 3. The winner of that matchup will play at the state tournament.
