Use of courthouse lawn granted for yoga
The west lawn of the Jefferson County Courthouse will host a large group of yoga enthusiasts participating in the Southeast Iowa Wellness Expo Sept. 25 at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors this morning approved the event for the courthouse lawn, but not until after holding discussion regarding an all-encompassing policy regarding requests to use the lawn.
Terry Baker, assistant director of the Fairfield Iowa Convention and Visitors Bureau, asked the supervisors to allow six instructors and possibly hundreds of yoga practitioners to use the lawn in what could become an annual event. The goal would be to break a group yoga record to promote wellness in the community.
“I don’t really have a problem with it,” said supervisor Dick Reed. “It’s just yoga out there.”
Supervisor Steve Burgmeier said it would be in the “best interest of the county” to set a policy for use of the courthouse lawn.
“I don’t have a problem with this event,” said Burgmeier, “but how do we say no to another group for something else we don’t necessarily agree with?”
