A mother’s concern
One of Iowa’s newest citizens visited the Iowa Statehouse this month to encourage legislators to help children get the best start possible in life. Kylie and her mother, Stacey Frelun, met Sen. Rich Taylor of Mount Pleasant. The American Heart Association organized the event in support of “pulse-oximetry” testing for all newborns. Small hearts can conceal big challenges, especially when it comes to congenital heart defects, the number one cause of birth-related deaths. Health care advocates say this simple, non-invasive heart defect screening has the potential to save the lives of countless newborns.
