After house fire, family lacks basic necessities
Pence Elementary School is serving as a collection and drop-off point for donations for the Fairfield family that experienced a home fire Tuesday night.
The family’s children attend Pence and Fairfield Middle School.
Chris Welch, principal at Pence Elementary School, and a guidance counselor at the middle school have asked for help in getting the word out about needed items.
No one was hurt in the fire, but the family lost everything. The combination of smoke and water damage has left the home unlivable. The family is getting some community based supports as well as Red Cross assistance.
School personnel will use monetary donations to purchase clothing and other goods for the family, but staff also is looking for donations of the following items for two adults and three children:
• Toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, hairbrushes, and gift cards to the Easy Wash Laundry owned by Dexter Laundry Inc. at Fourth Street and Burlington Avenue.
• Boy’s shirts, size large 10-12; shorts size 12-14; socks and underwear; and pajamas.
• Boy’s shirts, size adult medium; shorts, size adult medium; socks and underwear; and pajamas.
• Girl’s shirts, XL; shorts and pants XL or XXL; sports bras; underwear and socks.
In addition, the family needs volunteers with trailers to help remove burnt items from the home. A time for cleanup will be announced later.
Pence Elementary School will accept donations for the family through Wednesday. After Wednesday, contact Welch at 919-8893.
