Apr 30, 2014

ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA SOUTH-CENTRAL IOWA SUPPORT GROUP

The Alzheimer’s & Dementia South-central Iowa Support Group will meet from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Home in Ottumwa.

The support group meets the first Sunday of each month. It is free and open to the public.

The meetings are an opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and care partnering from peers who have had similar experiences or have the same questions and concerns. The meetings help participants develop problem-solving skills and learn about community resources. It also encourages care partners to maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health.

For more information about the group, contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

ARC OF JEFFERSON & NEARBY COUNTIES

The board of directors of The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties met recently at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, with Brian Simmons presiding.

Treasurer Barb Withrow noted she would be sending a check to Camp Courageous again in the near future for camperships. Janet Morris reported proceeds from a dance at Fairfield Middle School, sponsored by Washington Elementary School, are earmarked for Camp Courageous. Withrow accepted a check for The Arc from the First National Bank’s Jeans Friday for $465; the donation is to be used for camperships.

A thank-you was read from Van Buren Community School District elementary students in special education for money received at Christmas; due to adverse winter weather, the money has been held for a sSpring party. Funds were approved for the Challenge Little League end-of-the-season picnic, as well as funds to help the Challenge team attend a Burlington Bees game in June.

The Arc has applied for a gambling permit to sell raffle tickets and draw for a large TV at the Greater Jefferson County Fair set for June 25-29. Kathy Henry will schedule workers for five Arc booths reserved to accommodate the silent auction and Arc material. Darlene Vorhies will coordinate the silent auction, with help from Sheila Clements, Julie Glueck, Linda Hinshaw, Mary Sue Hoaglin, Brian Simmons and Jeannine Simmons in acquiring silent auction items.

Brian Simmons coordinated a pasta dinner at Fairfield Foursquare Church last month which raised more than $600; the church will be given a donation for use of the church.

The Arc is considering the sale of the popcorn machine at FMS since Janet Morris will retire at the end of the school year; Morris has coordinated the use of the machine since its purchase a number of years ago. Anyone interested in purchasing the machine could contact Brian Simmons at 919-4004.

Lori Vaughan will chair the audit committee and get assistance from other members; Mary Sue Hoaglin and Darlene Vorhies will make up the nominating committee.

The group approved sending a card and $10 to graduating seniors with special needs at Fairfield, Harmony, Pekin and Van Buren community school districts. Numbers are being acquired from teacher representatives of each of those districts.

The next Arc board meeting has been changed to 5:30 p.m. May 29 due to State Special Olympics taking place on the fourth Thursday.

The Arc annual meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 19 at the Fairfield Public Library meeting room. Anyone wishing further information about The Arc or either of these meetings can contact Brian Simmons at 919-4004.
