AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
The American Legion Auxiliary 0047 recently held its first meeting of the new year at the VFW Hall.
The meeting opened with a prayer, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the Auxiliary Preamble.
A thank-you note was read from Roger Frakes, who noted intentions to continue helping with Poppy Days; Mrs. Frakes recently passed away.
Secretary Darlene Vorhies read a Department letter regarding plans for an Iowa Department Day of Service in March or April. Volunteers will make quilts for Quilts of Valor, a nationally recognized program with a mission to cover all service members touched by war with comforting quilts stitched with love, prayers and healing thoughts.
Vorhies noted Legislative Day for veterans concerns will be Wednesday at the State Capitol.
Treasurer Shirley Kitch reported $340 has been sent to Department so a local high school junior can attend Girls State in June. Kitch noted money has again been sent for veterans needs at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, to The Fairfield Ledger for a shared portion of the Veterans Day centerfold in November, and a donation will be made to the veteran who made the 2013 poppies already received. A thank-you note is being sent to American Legion 0047 for a donation of $1,000, and approval was given for a $100 donation to support the next Honor Tour.
The next meeting will be March 20; members approved future meetings to be held at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m.
