Area blood drives scheduled

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has scheduled several area blood drives.

A blood drive is set from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 16 in the conference room of the Jefferson County Health Center. Donors who last gave on or before June 21 are eligible to give at this drive.

A blood drive is set from 3-6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building. Donors who last gave on or before June 24 are eligible to give again.

Walk-in donors are welcome at the two blood drives in Fairfield, but those who would like appointments can call 800-452-1097 or visit the website www.bloodcenter.org.

Lockridge Fire and Rescue is sponsoring a blood drive from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Lockridge Senior Center. Donors who last gave blood on or before June 25 are eligible to give again.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but those who would like appointments can call Sonja Graber at 319-696-3686.

Hope Lutheran Church in the Germanville community near Brighton will host a blood drive from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the church. Donors who last gave on or before June 26 are eligible to give again.

The Richland community will host a blood drive from 2-6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Mother Cabrini Parish Center. Donors who last gave blood on or before July 3 or eligible to give again.

According to the blood center staff, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, although 16-year-olds can donate by presenting a parental permission form available at the website. Donors must weigh more than 110 pounds. People with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure can be accepted as eligible donors.

Potential donors must present a photo identification or Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donor card.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the provider of blood and blood components to more than 87 hospitals in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin. The blood center is the exclusive provider to Jefferson County Health Center.

The blood center recently collected 58 pints of blood at three blood drives.

The mobile unit drew 16 pints of blood July 18 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building, 21 pints July 31 at the fairgrounds and 21 pints July 31 at the Keosauqua Senior Center.

According to blood center officials, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
