Area blood drives scheduled
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has scheduled several blood drives in the Jefferson and Van Buren county areas.
Three blood drive events are set Dec. 26.
The first is scheduled from 2-6:30 p.m. Dec. 26 in the downstairs dining room of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield.
The second is scheduled from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 26 at the Keosauqua Senior Center in Keosauqua.
The third is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. Dec. 26 at the Batavia Senior Citizen Community Center.
A donor can give blood every eight weeks; a person who last gave on or before Oct. 31 is eligible to donate again Dec. 26.
A fourth blood drive event is set from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 28 in the Jefferson County Health Center’s conference room.
Donors who last gave blood on or before Nov. 2 are eligible to donate again.
Walk-in donors are welcome at any of the blood drive events, but appointments can be set by calling 800-452-1097.
According to blood center personnel, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about an hour to complete.
Donors must be at least 16 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. A blood donor card or other photo identification is required. Sixteen-year-old donors must present a signed parental consent form each time they donate. Forms are available at www.bloodcenter.org.
Blood drive results given
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center mobile units recently drew 58 pints of blood at two area blood drives.
A total of 21 pints of blood were collected Dec. 4 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building.
A total of 37 pints of blood were collected Dec. 10 at the Mother Cabrini Parish Center in Richland.
According to the blood center officials, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
