Area blood drives scheduled
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has scheduled two blood drives.
The first is set from 3-7 p.m. May 14 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building. Donors who last gave blood on or before March 19 are eligible to donate again.
The second is from 3-7 p.m. May 30 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building. Donors who last gave blood on or before April 4 are eligible to donate again.
Walk-in donors are welcome at both blood drive events, but those who would like an appointment can call the blood center at 800-452-1097.
Donors must be in good health, be at least 16 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. A blood donor card or other form of photo identification is required to donate. Sixteen-year-olds must present a signed parental consent form each time they donate. Consent forms are available at the blood center’s website www.bloodcenter.org.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center mobile unit has been busy in the area with local blood drives.
The unit drew 34 pints April 15 at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Fairfield; 34 pints April 16 at Cambridge Investment Research Inc. in Fairfield; 25 pints April 22 at First United Methodist Church in Fairfield; 27 pints April 23 at Prairie View United Methodist Church near Ollie; 27 pints April 23 at the Batavia Community Senior Center in Batavia; 18 pints April 25 at Birmingham Lions Building in Birmingham; and 38 pints April 26 at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
According to Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center officials, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
