Area residents win at state fair
Dwight Westercamp of Batavia showed the winning rabbit in the Largest Rabbit contest judged Friday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Bertha, a Flemish giant, weighed in at 20 pounds, 8 ounces.
Westercamp’s wife Marge showed the second largest rabbit weighing in at 20 pounds, two ounces.
Other area residents whose rabbits placed in the contest were: third place, Stephanie Wharton, Brighton, 19 pounds, 6 ounces; fourth place, Jennifer Wharton, Brighton, 19 pounds, 4 ounces; and eighth place, Alley Odland, Brighton, 13 pounds.
Chad Grimm of Keosauqua was awarded Reserve Champion Gilt honors in the Chester White Swine Show. Animals are divided according to farrowing date based on the other animals entered in the competition. Grimm also placed third in the Gilts Class 1 and first in the Gilts Class 3.
Judith McDonough of Douds won several awards in the English Society Horse Show. She placed third in Hackney Pony Pleasure Driving; second in Roadster Pony Single: Open; first in Roadster Pony Single: Amateur; and she earned the Roadster Pony Stake. Third place in Hackney Pony Pleasure Driving went to Herron Stables of Douds.
Victoria Eckley of Hedrick placed first in the Broodmares category of the FFA Horse Show. She competed with 103 exhibitors from 36 FFA chapters who showed a total of 179 animals.
Nancy Oliver of Fairfield placed second in Apiary competion, Photograph, Specific Subject.
Young fairgoers pedaled their way to victory at the Pedal Power Pull Aug. 13 at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.
In the Pedal Power Pull, kids attempt to pedal a mini tractor 40 feet — a “full pull” — pulling a box weighing from 80 pounds for 4-year-olds to 260 pounds for 11-year-olds. In the event of a tie or two full pulls, weight is added and a re-pull is held to determine the winner.
Local winners were:
In the 5-Year-Old class — third place, Zachary Doud, Batavia, full pull, 25 feet, 6 inches; and fourth place, Caden Jarvis, Bonaparte, full pull, 24 feet, 7 inches.
In the 11-Year-Olds class — first place, Ethan Diephuis, Farmington, 38 feet, 10 inches.
Thirteen-year-old Stetson Spees of Fairfield placed third in the youth class of the KRNT Cow Chip Throwing Wednesday. He threw his cow chip 97 feet.
Twenty-five-year-old Blake Wallace of Fairfield competed in the 35th annual Monster Arm Wrestling Tournament. Forty-eight men and women competed in six different weight classes. In Men’s Right, Flyweight, Wallace placed first. In Men’s Right, Lightweight, he placed second. In Men’s Left, Flyweight, Wallace placed first, and in Men’s Left, Lightweight, he placed second.
Julia Fritz, 12, of Brighton performed a vocal solo in the Sprout division Wednesday to advance to semi-finals in Iowa State Fair Talent Search.
The 2013 Iowa State Fair ended Sunday after an 11-day run at the fairgrounds in Des Moines.
