Area wrestling squads to be represented at state
PLEASANTVILLE — Cardinal pushed two wrestlers through to the state tournament, and Pekin and Van Buren qualified one wrestler each at Saturday’s district tournament in Pleasantville.
Cardinal 113-pound junior Ryan Cale won a district title and senior teammate Dustin Miller placed second at 182 pounds to advance to state. Pekin senior Austyn Vogel won a district title to qualify at 152 pounds, and Van Buren will be represented at state by junior Jacob Heisel at 126 pounds.
Cale, who will be making his second straight appearance at Wells Fargo, won by tech fall over B-G-M’s Jack Worthington in the semifinals, then pinned Southeast Warren’s Jonathon Hardy in the championship match.
Cale’s teammate Miller won via 14-9 decision against Christian Williams of B-G-M and lost 13-6 to Eddyville-Blakesburg’s Dillon Pigsley in the championship. He rebounded against Belle Plaine’s Grant Bevins in the second-place match, winning by fall in 5:18 to secure a spot a state.
And after missing out on the state tournament last season, Pekin’s Vogel looked like a man possessed in his matches, picking up pins in 2:50 and 1:08, respectively, to continue onward.
Heisel earned his first district title with a pair of pins. The Warrior won by fall in 36 ticks vs. Colfax-Mingo’s Richard Blom in the semifinals and pinned Cody Brown of Eddyville-Blakesburg in 3:05.
Area wrestlers who saw their seasons come to an end just shy of state include Van Buren’s Tyler Runyon (106 pounds), Cardinal’s Tyler Albert (160) and Pekin’s Trenton Conger (195).
