Artifacts more than 1,000 years old found in cave

Sep 12, 2013

MONTICELLO (AP) — Artifacts estimated at 1,000 to 1,500 years old have been found in a cave on land recently bought by an eastern Iowa county.

Cedar Rapids television station KCRG says the landowner told officials there was a cave with ancient artifacts on the more than 500 acres acquired by the Jones County Conservation Board.

That’s proved to be true, and state archaeologist John Doershuk and some volunteers have been unearthing the cave’s secrets.

Pottery shards, tools, animal bones and a spear point are among the pieces sifted from the dirt. The digging will continue through Sept. 26.

Officials say the site was looted about 20 years ago by pilferers who pushed around dirt and the small artifacts.
