Artists studio tour Saturday, Sunday
The eighth annual Southeast Iowa Artists Studio Tour is set this weekend in Van Buren, Des Moines, Henry, Lee and Washington counties.
The event hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The free event is a self-guided driving tour. Thirty-two artists are on the tour; some locations will have unadvertised guest artists, too.
Three of the tour stops are in Van Buren County. In Birmingham, Melinda Stockwell will have The Calico Press, a letterpress print shop, open for visitors. Stockwell creates fine art prints, marbled papers and greeting cards in her studio shop. Everyone will have an opportunity to make a print.
Marilyn Thomas will be at Bonaparte Pottery in Bonaparte. The historic site includes the original buildings of the pottery factory and a riverbank wall of broken midden. Visitors can see archaeologic excavation sites and watch demonstrations using original molds from 1875. Bonaparte Pottery includes an incubator location for other artists.
The Parlor Room Studio of the Herman Greef House in Bentonsport will host two artists: Gin Lammert and Marybeth Heikes.
Lammert’s primary mediums are soft pastels and oil paints, while Heikes is a water media artist working in both traditional watercolors and acrylic collages.
In 2015, Southeast Iowa Artists Studio Tour was recognized by the Iowa Tourism Bureau as one of the top 5 fall events in Iowa.
