Atwood’s 17 points lifts Pekin
KALONA — Beth Atwood turned in a career performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the Pekin girls’ basketball team to a 59-41 victory over IMS Tuesday evening in Kalona.
Gwynne Wright also had 12 points and three assists and Madelyn Baker scored 11 points for Pekin, which has won two of its past three games.
The Panthers jumped out to a 12-6 advantage to start and worked their way to a 21-18 lead by halftime. Leading 37-30 after three periods, the Panthers caught fire in the final period to score 22 more points.
Also for Pekin, Jessica Horras and Sam Wright provided eight and seven points, respectively. Horras had two blocks and a team-high 12 boards, and Wright finished with three assists. Tiana Slaney tacked on four points.
The Panthers (8-9, 8-8 SEISC North) host Highland on Friday.
IMS boys win 69-48
KALONA — Pekin fell behind 18-5 in the first quarter of Tuesday’s matchup with IMS, and the visiting Panthers never recovered.
IMS upped its lead to 31-23 by halftime and held on for a 69-48 victory over its SEISC north division rival in Kalona. The win improves IMS’ record to 13-2 and 9-1 in the conference. Pekin drops to 10-6 overall and 9-6 in the north division.
Pekin senior Graham Wittrock led the Panthers with 14 points, while junior Cade Millikin scored 11 points in addition to three assists. Brody Long finished the game with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Panthers host Highland Friday.
