‘Back to Church Sunday’ plannedFirst Christian Church and Faith Christian Outreach Church are participating in the nationwide event
Two area churches are among the 20,000 churches nationwide participating in the fifth annual “Back to Church Sunday” campaign Sunday.
The evangelism and worship committees of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fairfield invite all members and friends to attend the 10:45 a.m. service, followed by fellowship, including a potluck lunch, in the dining room.
The committees will be providing the meat, drink and table service for the potluck.
Faith Christian Outreach Church, based in Mount Pleasant, with 10:30 a.m. Sunday satellite church services at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, also is participating in Back to Church Sunday.
Back to Church Sunday was launched four years ago in response to a survey of thousands of adults in the United States who said they would visit a church if someone simply invited them, explained the Rev. Monte Knudsen, pastor of Faith Christian Outreach Church.
For many people, church is associated with God’s message of love, yet they do not relate to its liturgy or structure, Knudsen continued. They wonder if they will be accepted or even welcomed. Their simple, but actual fears, keep them away even if they would like to try the experience.
For most, a genuine invitation helps break that barrier, he said.
The campaign is the single largest annual community outreach in the nation sharing the message and mission of inviting everyone back to church. It empowers churches and their members to welcome neighbors, friends and loved ones back to church, while providing the “unchurched” a way to find a welcoming church in their community.
Churches that participated in the past have reported an average 38 percent increase in attendance.
Back to Church Sunday has an interactive Facebook page, www.facebook.com/backtochurch, and a roster of participating churches on its website, www.backtochurch.com.
