Band concert set Sunday in Douds-Leando park
LEANDO — An old-fashioned band concert by the Tarnished Brass Band, under the director of Ken Burns, will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Park in Leando.
The event will be held in recognition of the 175th anniversary of the platting of the town of Portland in 1838, which was to become Leando.
Leando, on the south side of the Des Moines River, opposite its twin city of Douds in Van Buren County, was platted as Portland and filed at the Van Buren County Courthouse on Feb. 27, 1838, by Samuel Holcomb, Robert Lagett, David Maggard, William S. Burgefs, Zepheniah Holcomb and John Tolman. By action of the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors in 1883, the name of the town was changed to Leando.
Pie, ice cream, beverage and root beer floats will be served during the concert, with a free-will offering going to the band and the Douds Historical Preservation Association projects.
In case of rain, the event will be held at Christ United Methodist Church adjacent to the park.
Everyone is invited to come, bring lawn chairs and enjoy the band concert sponsored by the Douds Historical Preservation Association Inc.
