Fairfield Middle School sent two six-member teams to compete in the regional Battle of the Books, sponsored by Great Prairie Area Education Agency, Monday at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

One team competed in the elementary division and the other team competed in the middle school division.

Members for the elementary team were: Katlyn Adam, Serene Lu, Dallen Rippey, Anais Rivera, Drew Twohill, and Bradley Warnell.

Members of the middle school team were: Adrie Clendineng, Erin Epperson, Abby Ford, Spencer Hilger, Teddy Metcalf, and Dillan Post.

The teams were coached by Fairfield Public Library’s youth librarian Afton Hallauer and Fairfield Middle School librarian Dee Ann Lantz.

The team members read and studied 30 books to prepare for the contest.

Teams were allowed one hour to complete a 60-question, short-answer test. While the tests were being scored, students watched a skype presentation by author Carol Gorman.

Four area teams qualified to advance to the oral round, where teams were challenged with an additional 60 questions.

“This is the first year we have participated so we are ‘learning the ropes,’” said Lantz. “Neither of our teams made it to the finals, but we had a great time, learned a lot, and the kids are already excited to start reading for next year’s competition.”
