Bell removed from Zwingle church set for closure
ZWINGLE (AP) — The bell of a 165-year-old church in Zwingle has been removed ahead of the church’s closing.
The Telegraph Herald reports that no bell rang Sunday at Harmony United Church of Christ. The 1,432-pound bell, which was installed in 1886, was taken down Saturday by a handful of the remaining 30 or so church members and volunteers.
The church is set to close Jan. 8 due to the declining number of congregation members. Members dipped into church savings last year to try and keep it open, but Harmony will join other small area churches that have had to close.
The bell will be sent to Dubuque for cleaning and then placed in the cemetery. Proceeds from the church’s sale will go toward the cemetery’s upkeep.
