Blood donors can win $100 gift card drawing
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has scheduled blood drives in Birmingham and Fairfield, and the names of donors will be entered into a $100 gift-card drawing.
The Birmingham Lions Club will host a blood drive from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Birmingham Lions Building. Donors can give blood every eight weeks, so those who last gave on or before Oct. 31 are eligible to give again at this event. To donate, call Harry Anderson at 319-498-4201 or visit the website www.bloodcenterimpact.org.
First United Methodist Church in Fairfield will host a blood drive from 2-6:30 p.m. Dec. 30. Donors who last gave on or before Nov. 4 are eligible to give again. To donate, call Melva Dahl at 472-5762.
Eligible donors must be at least 17 years of age — or 16 with a signed parental permission form available at www.bloodcenter.org — and weigh more than 110 pounds. A person with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure can be accepted as an eligible donor. A photo identification or Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donor card is required to donate.
According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 45-60 minutes; one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the provider of blood and blood components to more than 87 hospitals in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin. It is the exclusive provider to Jefferson County Health Center and the Van Buren County Hospital.
The center’s mobile unit drew 22 pints of blood Nov. 4 at the First United Methodist Church.
