Blood drive July 31 in Keosauqua

Jul 23, 2013

KEOSAUQUA — Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will conduct a community blood drive from 3-7 pm. July 31 at the Keosauqua Senior Center.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but those who would like an appointment can call the blood center at 800-452-1097 or visit the website www.bloodcenter.org.

Donors who last gave blood on or before June 5 are eligible to donate again; donors can give blood every eight weeks.

Potential donors must be 17 years old — 16 with a parental permission form available on the website — and weigh more than 110 pounds. A photo identification or Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donor card is required to donate. People with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure can be accepted as eligible donors.

According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe and simple procedure that takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the provider of blood and blood components to more than 87 hospitals in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin. It is the exclusive provider to Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The blood center’s mobile crew drew 37 pints of blood July 9 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building.

The mobile crew drew nine pints of blood July 15 at Roosevelt Community Recreation Center.

According to blood center officials, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
