Blood drive results announced
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center announced results of recent blood drives.
The mobile crew drew 25 pints of blood June 10 at Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation during a drive in honor of Cody Cohen. Cohen, a 2013 Fairfield High School graduate, was diagnosed in December with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood cancer, and prescribed a bone marrow transplant as treatment. In March, Cohen’s disease had progressed from MDS into acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), said Dawn Safrit, executive director of Noah’s Ark. Cohen has received one round of chemo and is currently undergoing his second round, she continued. By hosting a blood drive, Noah’s Ark officials hoped to facilitate not only the needs that Cohen is facing, but also the needs of others, said Safrit.
The blood center’s mobile crew drew 25 pints of blood June 12 at First National Bank in Fairfield.
According to blood center officials, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering the hosptal will eed blood products.
