Blood drive scheduled Monday
A Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drive is scheduled from 2-6 p.m. Monday in the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building.
Donors can give blood every eight weeks; those who last gave on or before Sept. 30 are eligible to give again Monday. To donate, contact Ottumwa Telerecruitment Department at 800-452-1097 or visit the website www.bloodcenterimpact.org.
Eligible donors must be at least 17 years of age — or 16 with a signed parental permission form available at www.bloodcenter.org — and weigh more than 110 pounds. A person with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure can be accepted as an eligible donor. A photo identification or Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donor card is required to donate.
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center recently collected 144 pints of blood at five blood drives.
A total of 20 pints of blood was collected Oct. 31 at the Birmingham Lions Building in Birmingham.
A total of 39 pints of blood was collected Oct. 30 at the Pekin High School in Packwood.
A total of 40 pints of blood was collected Oct. 29 at the Van Buren Community High School in Keosauqua.
A total of 30 pints of blood were collected Oct. 25 at the Jefferson County Health Center.
A total of 15 pints of blood were collected Oct. 22 at the Batavia Senior Citizen Community Center.
According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 45-60 minutes; one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering the hospital will need blood products.
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the provider of blood and blood components to more than 87 hospitals in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin. It is the exclusive provider to Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield and the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.
