Nov 15, 2012

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drives are planned in Jefferson and Van Buren counties.

The first is scheduled from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building in Fairfield.

Donors who last gave blood on or before Sept. 26 are eligible to donate. Donors can give blood every eight weeks.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling 800-452-1097.

The second is set from 3-7 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Keosauqua Senior Center in Keosauqua.

Donors who last gave blood on or before Oct. 3 are eligible to donate.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling 800-452-1097.

According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about an hour to complete. Donors must be 16 years old or older, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. A blood donor card or other photo identification is required to donate. Sixteen-year-old donors must present a signed parental consent form each time they donate. The form is available at www.bloodcenter.org.

The blood center recently collected 113 pints of blood at three area blood drives.

The mobile unit drew 15 pints of blood Oct. 23 during a drive at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building.

The mobile unit drew 38 pints of blood Oct. 24 at the Van Buren High School in Keosauqua.

It also drew 59 pints of blood Oct. 31 at Pekin High School in Packwood.

According to the blood center, one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients, and one out of every five people entering a hospital will need blood products.
