Braun awarded second place at speech contest
Seth Braun, a resident of Fairfield, placed second in the District 19 Toastmasters International Speech Competition the weekend of May 17 in Dubuque.
District 19 includes all of Iowa and parts of Illinois and Nebraska. Braun competed and won in club, Area 92 and Division E contests for the chance to compete in Dubuque.
The speech contest was focused on speaking to inspire. Braun appropriately spoke about the immigrant story of his great-grandparents settling in the United States, and the myriad of obstacles that were conquered on the way to their new life.
“The funny thing about speech contests is the subjectivity,” said Braun. “I thought I lost at the Division level contest, but was sure that I would win at the District level. You really can’t get too attached to the outcome. You are there to improve. That is the No. 1 goal.”
Braun is a member of Golden Speakers Toastmasters in Fairfield, which meets at 7:40 p.m. every Tuesday in the Fairfield Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store Club Room. The Fairfield club has a rich history of winning speakers; most notable is Ed Hipp, who earned top honors in the District 19 Humorous Speech contest in multiple years. Several other Golden Speakers Toastmasters have competed at high levels in recent years as well.
“We are very proud to have Seth as a member of our club,” said club president Rhonda Whitaker. “His recent contest accomplishments, as well as all his professional success, is a testament to the value and contributions that Toastmasters makes in everyday life.”
