Bridge in Ottumwa to be rebuilt
CHARITON – Replacement of a bridge on Highway 34 over the Des Moines River in Ottumwa will begin Wednesday, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
The construction will be done in stages and requires shifting westbound traffic to the eastbound portion of the bridge and reducing traffic to one lane in each direction.
The westbound portion of the bridge is expected to be completed by mid-summer. Traffic will be shifted at that time to the westbound lanes while the eastbound portion of the bridge is replaced. There will be a 12-foot width lane restriction in the construction zone. This project is expected to be completed in November.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limits and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
