BYU’s music, dance at Sondheim
Brigham Young University brings two award-winning performing groups to the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts for a night of music and dance theater at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The show is part of the Summer at the Sondheim Series.
Synthesis, an award-winning jazz ensemble, combines swing, blues, jazz, pop, Latin, funk and fusion styles in an exhilarating, high-quality performance.
Through music and dance, Contemporary Dance Theater will present an evening of motion, color, fun and artistic energy with a high level of discipline in an expressive, dramatic style of modern movements.
Synthesis’s swingin’ beats, catchy tunes and funky rhythms are sure to keep you dancing all night long. Synthesis travels throughout the world presenting popular and original music with new, innovative, swinging beats, all while exhibiting their first-class music and utmost professionalism.
Synthesis puts on a show as loose and as astounding as Louis Armstrong’s freestyle. The group’s repertoire flows indiscriminately through swing, jazz, blues, rock, fusion, gospel and Latin styles. Along with their original music, they play the timeless numbers from jazz legends like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong.
Contemporary Dance Theater will perform a wide modern dance repertoire, including dramatic, jazz, humorous and lyrical works with a variety of innovative dance moves, stirring music and fun, unusual props. Through dance and music, the performance will explore the different forms of communication and interactions through the distinctions of western and eastern cultures.
With a balance of light hearted performances and moving choreography, this show is one that will touch audience members from all walks of life. Contemporary Dance Theater members form broaden friendships across borders as they dance between cultures.
The group loves to perform some audience favorites. This includes “Chakra” where the dancers encounter a unique object that invites them to discover; “Hambone for Two” where the performers encounter each other through rhythmic competition and flirtation; “The Boxes, Me and the Sound” where dancers take the American art form of tap dance to a new level and “Fling, Flang, Flung” where the dancers capture the nostalgia and lure of partner dancing.
