Organizers are seeking contestants for the 2013 Greater Jefferson County Fair Queen Contest set for 6:30 p.m. June 26 at the fair.

A contestant must be between the ages of 16 and 21 by Aug. 1. She must reside in Jefferson County or an adjoining county if the majority of her activities are in the county she represents. She must belong to at least one community organization, such as 4-H, Girl Scouts, a church group or a similar organization.

“This contest is not restricted to only 4-H or FFA members,” said organizer Kortney Heald.

“This is an excellent opportunity to experience the interview process and to brush up on your communication skills, to be able to share your opinions, experiences and ideas with your peers as well as judges,” she continued.

The Jefferson County Fair Queen Contest is not a beauty contest.

“We are looking for a well-rounded young lady who can represent herself at the county fair and also represent our county at the state fair competition,” Heald explained.

According to organizers’ mission statement: “The young lady … should be a well-rounded individual with her own voice and thoughts, who participates in activities not just for recreation, but to make a difference in her world and others around her. She should participate in both her school and community to the best of her ability beyond that which is expected of her. Overall, she should stand out from her peers and be a role model for those of all ages.”

Judging is based on poise and personality, self-presentation, responsiveness to questions during all interviews and on stage and personal appearance, Heald continued.

Any young woman interested in competing in the queen contest can pick up an application at the Jefferson County ISU Extension office or download and print the application from the fair’s website at at www.jeffersoncofair.com.

All applications are due by 4:30 p.m. June 7 to the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office.

The 2013 Greater Jefferson County Fair, with free front gate admission, runs June 26 through July 1. The queen contest is set for the opening evening on the show arena stage.

The queen competition will be preceded by the Little Miss Contest at 6 p.m. and followed by Bill Riley’s Iowa State Fair Talent Search contest at 7:30 p.m.
