Car show set Sunday, rain or shine
Collector Cars Unlimited will host its 31st annual car show, rain or shine, Sunday on and near the Fairfield square.
Registration for the show will be 8 a.m. to noon near the Ron Prill Bandstand in Central Park. Registration is $15, and dash plaques will be given to the first 150 registered cars.
“Our 28 classes can accommodate every vehicle,” said club member Steve Beeman.
Voting is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. Only registered participants are given ballots for voting.
The trophy presentation is set for 3:30 p.m. Special awards, such as best of show-car, best of show-truck and the Kenny Tillis Memorial Club’s Choice, along with first-place and class awards in each class will be presented as the winners parade their vehicles along the north side of Central Park.
“The parade of winners is kind of our club’s trademark,” said long-time club member Harry Clark. “When we started our shows out at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, the winners would drive through the show arena, and people liked it, so when we moved up to the square, we kept the tradition. It takes a little longer than just calling a person’s name and handing him a trophy, but people like it because they can see the winning vehicles.”
The event often draws more than 100 vehicles to town, but that number is dependent on the weather.
“Some people don’t like to bring their cars out in the rain, get them dirty and have to clean them up,” explained Clark.
The last couple of years have been rainy, so attendance was down, but good weather brings many participants and car enthusiasts. The show drew a record 200 registered vehicles in 2004.
