Cardinal beats Pekin 12-0 in softball action
ELDON — Injuries prevented the Pekin softball team from using its top two starters Friday, and Cardinal took advantage on its way to a 12-0 victory in Eldon.
The Cardinal hitters ended the game early, recording 12 hits in just four innings off Pekin freshman pitcher Courtney Comstock. The Comets scored seven runs in the first just hours after beating Wilton 7-2 at the Fairfield Invitational.
Cardinal’s Carlie Bennett, a junior, finished the game 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior teammate Lindsay Moore was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in, and Delaney Ridgway and Lexi Fullenkamp also slapped two hits each. Alexis Adam came through with a triple and Lindsey Davis smacked a double.
Fullenkamp did the rest of the work from the pitcher’s circle, giving up three hits in the shortened shutout. Fullenkamp also walked one and fanned one.
Cheyann Lankford, Maranda Baker and Madelyn Baker accounted for Pekin’s three hits. Comstock went 3 1/3 innings and gave up nine earned runs on 12 hits. The freshman pitcher walked three and struck out two.
The 5-4 Panthers return home to face WACO today. The 8-6 Comets host New London Tuesday.
