Cardinal, Pekin fall in boys’ basketball action

ELDON — A furious rally by the Cardinal boys’ basketball team came up just shy Thursday as the Comets fell to visiting Holy Trinity 65-63 in Eldon.

Trailing 50-32 after three quarters of play, the never-say-die Comets stormed back with a 31-point fourth to make the game interesting. Holy Trinity out-scored Cardinal 25-13 in the first quarter and led 37-26 by the halftime break.

Cardinal senior Dakota Showman led the comeback effort with 19 points, three assists and three steals. Junior Charlie Rachford supplied 13 points and three assists, and sophomore Kaleb Durflinger had nine points along with 13 boards to just miss a double-double.

Senior Cody Carter totaled nine points and three steals, Jonathan Pedersen finished with seven points and eight boards, and sophomore Brandon Potts scored six points to go with six rebounds.

Cardinal (10-8, 9-7 SEISC South) shot 12-for-13 from the foul line, and the host team was good on five of 11 3-point attempts. They also tallied four steals.

A difficult test looms with a home game vs. top-ranked and undefeated Danville on Saturday.

Pekin falls 54-49

WINFIELD — Pekin suffered a 54-49 loss at the hands of Winfield-Mount Union Thursday in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North action.

Senior Graham Wittrock led all Panthers in scoring with 12 points off four 3s, and he supplied four assists. Cade Millikin, a junior, totaled 11 points and four steals, while junior Petie Clubb scored eight. Another junior, Brody Long, pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds.

The Panthers (11-8, 9-8 SEISC North) conclude the regular season Saturday at home vs. WACO.
