Cardinal’s Parade of Bands moves to Eldon’s McHaffey Opera House
ELDON — Cardinal Community School District’s 2013 Parade of Bands Concert will move to a new venue for its performance at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The annual concert is usually held in the high school gymnasium, but this year, the district was offered the opportunity to perform at the newly refurbished McHaffey Opera House in Eldon.
“We believe this is the first performance in the Eldon opera house since movies were shown in 1947,”
said Joel Pederson, Cardinal superintendent.
“Eldon High School last graduated in the opera house in 1931,” he added.
The Parade of Bands Concert will include Cardinal’s fifth-grade band, middle school band and high school band.
A committee in Eldon has been restoring the 120-year-old opera house for 18 years, including installing new roofs, a furnace and air conditioning.
The committee has raised thousands of dollars throughout the years in a thrift store and has received some grants to help with the restoration work.
The Christmas Tree Wanderland has been set up on the building’s main floor for an annual holiday event for several years.
The committee eventually wants to add a museum and bring back play performances.
“Smoke on the Mountain,” the first feature in the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival’s summer-long event, will be the first play performed in the opera house since the early 20th century.
“Smoke on the Mountain” will be presented June 7, 8 and 9 in the opera house.
