Cardinal’s season ends with loss at Pella Christian
The Cardinal Comets’ season concluded abruptly with a 9-2 loss in the second round of the regional playoffs Wednesday at Pella Christian.
The Comets were down just 4-2 entering the top of the seventh. Pella Christian (15-18), who was the away team on the scoreboard, was able to pile on five runs in the final inning to close out the game.
“The score was definitely not relative to how close the game was,” Cardinal coach Hilarie Droz. “We had a couple mental mistakes followed by a few errors in the seventh inning that cost us those five runs to be scored.”
Lindsey Davis knocked in Danae Moses and Jessie McElderry in the bottom of the first inning to put Cardinal up 2-1. McElderry and Moses both led the Comet offense with two hits.
Natalie Vos, who would only surrender two hits and not a single run the rest of the way, replaced Pella Christian starting pitcher Nicole Kelderman in the second inning.
Cardinal (17-12) defeated BGM (Brooklyn) in the first round 13-1 Tuesday before advancing. The Comets had a seven-game winning streak early on in the season and lost an extremely tight game against Class 1A No. 1 ranked Highland at the Fairfield Invitational on June 11.
“These girls have so much talent and potential and can go so far,” Droz said. “Some of the loses we had this season we shouldn’t have had.”
The team has only two seniors, Schylar Conger and Carlie Bennett, and Droz is looking forward to the multitude of talent coming back for the Comets next season. The normal 1-6 in the batting order and starting pitcher Lexi Fullenkamp will all be back.
“I know they can do so much better,” Droz said. “We are still young, and that’s a positive going into next season. We’ll be back next season with more confidence, more experience, and a team full of girls that play with heart.”
