Cardinal stifles Pekin in softball, Panthers win in baseball
The Pekin High School baseball team was able to beat Cardinal 6-3 Friday in Eldon.
Keaton Winn pitched 6 1/3 innings for Pekin, striking out nine batters in the process. Winn also drove in two runs at the dish, and so did his teammate Cade Millikin. Jaydan Nicholson shut the door in the seventh inning, earning the save after getting the last two outs of the game. Pekin scored all six of its run in the first inning.
Cardinal only managed two hits in the game, two of which were from Cody Streeby. Conner McElderry and Streeby each drove in a run.
The Comets also fell Thursday night 5-3 to Danville. Streeby and McElderry each had two hits and a RBI. Adam Giltner, Chase Courtney and Brennon Elder each had one hit. Elder’s hit was a triple, and he also swiped three bases on the night.
Pekin (2-1) is scheduled to host Winfield-Mount Union tonight, while Cardinal (0-2) travels to Keosauqua to face Van Buren.
The Cardinal girls’ softball team defeated Pekin 12-2 Friday at Pekin High School. Lexi Fullenkamp pitched five innings for the Comets, giving up only five hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
“Lexi is doing a great job hitting her spots and keeping the other teams off balance,” Cardinal coach Hillary Droz said. “We started off pretty slow with our bats, but once we got going, we didn’t stop.”
Alexis Adam and Shelby Smith each had two hits and two RBI. Danae Moses hit a double and drove in two runs. Cassidy McMartin drove in two runs and had two RBI. Jessie McElderry and Schylar Conger both had a hit.
As for Pekin, Cassidy Tolle led the way by going 2-2 with a double, triple and a RBI. Peyton Atwood drove in the other run for Pekin. Tiana Slaney went 1-2 with a double.
Both teams play tonight, as Pekin (0-3) hosts Winfield-Mount Union and Cardinal (3-2) welcomes Van Buren.
