Cardinal, Van Buren rout Tuesday opponents in softball

ELDON — Cardinal softball made quick work of Danville in its season opener Tuesday, picking up an 11-1 win in a shortened, five-inning game.
Delaney Ridgway led from the batter’s box and the pitcher’s mound. Ridgway went 3-for-4 at the plate and tossed the complete game, giving up five hits while striking out six.
Senior teammate Lindsay Moore smacked a home run and drove in three runs, while Alexis Adam finished 2-for-3 with a triple. Cassidy McMartin finished 2-for-3 and Lindsey Davis hit a two-bagger.
The 1-0 Comets travel to Burlington today for a doubleheader vs. the host Grayhounds.
Warriors win 14-0
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren exploded for 14 runs in the first inning of its Tuesday softball game vs. Harmony and posted a three-inning, 14-0 win in Keosauqua.
Just two days removed from representing Van Buren at the state track and field championships, Hanna Haynes led the way with two hits and three RBI. Kadie Meek went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in, and Abby Rider was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Caitlyn Millard finished 1-for-2 and knocked in two runs.
Payten Hughes pitches all three innings for Van Buren and tallied three strikeouts. Harmony managed just two hits vs. Hughes.
The Warriors (1-1) fell 18-1 to West Burlington in their season-opener Monday. They host Cardinal on Thursday.
