Jefferson County Cattlemen hosted its annual banquet for local cattlemen and industry partners Dec. 2 at the Fairfield Eagles Club.

Approximately 160 people had a steak dinner grilled by Van Buren County Cattlemen members and served by Jefferson County 4-H members.

Master of Ceremonies Bill Goehring started the evening with a variety of door prizes donated by area businesses. Dan Delaney highlighted the cattlemen organization’s activities for the past year.

Ray Woody reminisced of his days as a young veterinarian in the county. Sparky Wellman and Matthew Pemberton shared activities of Iowa Cattlemen’s Association at state and regional levels.

The featured guest speaker, Wayne Humpherys from Columbus Junction, added his own twist of humor to real-life stories about small-town experiences. His main message was that everyone can make a difference no matter how small or big the task.

Jefferson County Cattlemen recognized two individuals who have made contributions to the cattle industry and to the county-level organization. The Life-Time Achievement Award was given to Byron Leu, and the Youth Acheivement Award was given to Kelly Lacey.

All paid 2014 Jefferson County memberships were entered into a drawing. The winner of the $300 gift certificate for Luckman’s Hardware was Lonny Manning. All banquet ticket purchasers were entered into a drawing for $200 beef certificates. John Peck was the winner of the beef certificates.

Zoetis, Cargill and Hickenbottom Inc. contributed to the banquet.

The Jefferson County Cattlemen’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at Kokomo’s Bar and Grill. Kent Mowrer from the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers will be the guest speaker.
