Cedar Rapids council member running for U.S. House
CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) — A member of the Cedar Rapids City Council says she'll seek the Democratic nomination for Iowa's 1st Congressional District seat.
The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that Monica Vernon announced Tuesday she'd seek the position, left vacant by incumbent Rep. Bruce Braley's bid for U.S. Senate.
Vernon says in a news release she wants to "move past the gridlock" in Congress and work on issues.
She joins state Rep. Pat Murphy of Dubuque in seeking the Democratic nomination.
Republicans Rod Blum of Dubuque and Steve Rathje of Cedar Rapids also have declared they will run for the 1st district seat. Republican House Speaker Kraig Paulsen of Hiawatha says he's considering a run.
