Christmas at McElhinny House ushers in holidays
Once again the Fairfield Women’s Club is inviting the public to usher in the Christmas season at the historic McElhinny House from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
In years past, the club sponsored the tour of homes featuring local residences all decked out for the holidays. Most folks now are too busy to decorate with the zeal that once accompanied the season, so that tradition ended a few years ago. Instead of the tour of homes, the Fairfield Women’s Club has a full day of Christmas at McElhinny House.
The house has been gorgeously decorated inside by Marshan Roth, with help from club president Lou Snead and others. The exterior is bedecked in Christmas finery by the garden department of the women’s club.
As well as being able to see this lovely old home in its Christmas glory, there will be a bazaar with wonderful items made by members of the art/craft department.
The club will offer a bake sale, featuring homemade pies, cakes, candies, breads and more. As in recent years, the women’s club will be selling its frozen chicken casseroles, with their garden department offering frozen ham balls. A cookie cookbook also will be available for purchase.
This year marks the fourth year for a limited edition porcelain Christmas ornament, featuring the William Henry Coop and Friend statue in Central Park. The price remains at $15. To be assured of getting one, call 319-695-3037 to place an order as supplies are limited.
The beautifully decorated tea table will offer samples of goodies, which can be purchased at the bake table, as well as hot beverages. There will be a display of members’ wonderful collections in the parlor.
Register at the door for the drawing of the door prize, a print by Julie Johnston.
