Live-animal Christmas play set at Washington church

WASHINGTON, Iowa — Marion Avenue Baptist Church will present its annual live-animal Christmas play today through Sunday at the church.

Public showings will be at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Private showings are planned for the “bus ministry” at 7 p.m. today and for reserved group seating at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The church put together its first live-animal Christmas play 39 years ago. What started as a simple production has turned into an event, with an all-new script each year, that people from across southeast Iowa have turned into a Christmas tradition for their families.

Taking place in the church auditorium, the play featues a series of scenes from the Bethlehem marketplace to the the manger where Jesus was born.

An array of animals are included in the play; Mary rides a donkey down the center aisle, and the actors sing songs of the season.

Admission is free.
