Churches set Holy Week, Easter events

Several area churches have announced plans for Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

Prairie View United Methodist Church, at the intersection of Packwood Road and Highway 78 will have Palm Sunday worship, followed by fellowship, at 9 a.m. Sunday. A Good Friday service is set for 7 p.m. March 29, and Easter Sunday worship, followed by fellowship, will be at 9 a.m. March 31.

Packwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Packwood will host a Holy Thursday service at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon is inviting everyone to an Easter sunrise service, including a short skit by the children’s drama group, at 7 a.m. March 31. After the service, the Sunday school classes will provide breakfast in the dining hall. No 8 a.m. worship will be held, but Sunday school will be at 9 a.m., with the regular worship at 10 a.m. Childcare is provided.

First Baptist Church will have an outdoor sunrise service at 7 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31, at Chautauqua Park. Those attending should bring lawn chairs. A breakfast, for a free-will offering will be at 8 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9 a.m. and worship at 10:15 a.m.

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fairfield will have a Palm Sunday service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday and a Maundy Thursday service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. An Easter breakfast is planned for 9:15 a.m. March 31. The menu includes a breakfast casserole, coffee cake, rolls, fresh fruit, milk and coffee for a free-will offering. The Easter worship will be at 10:45 a.m.

First Lutheran Church in Fairfield will have Palm Sunday worship, with Holy Communion, at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by fellowship. The church will host a presentation of the Van Buren Cooperative Ministry Group’s “The Last Supper” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday; the community is invited. Maundy Thursday worship, with Holy Communion, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the Good Friday Tenebrae worship will be at 7 p.m. March 29. An Easter Vigil is set for 7 p.m. March 30, and a “Celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord,” with Holy Communion, is set for 9 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31.

Immanuel Lutheran Church will have a Divine Service with a children’s palm processional and Holy Communion, at 9 a.m. Sunday. A Maundy Thursday Divine Service, with Holy Communion is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, a Good Friday Tenebrae service is set for 7 p.m. March 29. A Sunrise Divine Service is set for 7 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31, followed by an 8 a.m. Easter breakfast and a Divine Service at 9:30 a.m.

Foursquare Church will have breakfast at 8 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31, with pancakes right off the griddle, egg casserole and fruit. Children will have an Easter egg hunt during Sunday school at 9 a.m. The youth will present “The EMPTY Tomb” during worship at 10 a.m.

St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield will have Passion Sunday with the blessing of the palms at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday. The church will host the Holy Week community service, with lunch, at noon Monday. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, with the “Mandatum of Charity: The Washing of Feet,” is at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Mass ends with the procession of the Blessed Sacrament into the Chapel of Repose for an all-night silent prayer vigil ending at 8 a.m. March 29. The Good Friday Liturgy will be at 7 p.m. March 29. The Easter Vigil begins at 8:15 p.m. March 30. Easter Sunday Masses, with baptismal vow renewals, will be at 8 and 10 a.m. March 31.

First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield hosts the Holy Week community service, with lunch, at noon Tuesday. It will have a Maundy Thursday service, with Communion, at 7 p.m. Thursday, and Easter worship at 10:30 a.m. March 31.

Fairfield Friends Church will host the Holy Week community service, with lunch, at noon Wednesday. The church also will have a Good Friday service, with Allen Melcher speaking, at 7 p.m. March 29. A pot-blessing breakfast is set for 6:45 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31, in the gym. Those attending are asked to bring food to share: fruit, doughnuts, coffee cake, muffins; the ovens will not be used that morning. Services will be at 8:15 and 10 a.m., with an Easter egg hunt to follow the service.

First United Methodist Church in Fairfield will have Palm Sunday services at 8 and 10:35 a.m. Sunday. The church will host the Holy Week community service with lunch, at noon Thursday. A Good Friday service is planned for 7 p.m. March 29. Plans for March 30 include Easter worship at 5 p.m. and worship in the labyrinth at 7:30 p.m. A sunrise service is set for 6:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 31. The United Methodist Men will serve breakfast at 7 a.m., and worship services will be at 8 and 10:35 a.m.

The Word of Life Lutheran Church will have a worship service with Procession of Palms at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A Maundy Thursday service, with Holy Communion, is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. The church will host the final Holy Week community service, with lunch, at noon Friday, and have a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Easter Sunday will begin with breakfast from 9-10 a.m., followed by an Easter service, with Holy Communion, at 10:30 a.m.

Those attending the Holy Week community services at noon Monday through March 29 who need to return to work may go to the front of the lunch line. A free-will donation for the light lunch will be collected to help defray the cost of the lunch, and any donations in excess of the cost will go to the Fairfield Area Ministerial Alliance transient fund.
