City needs money for fireworks
The city of Fairfield is accepting donations for the Independence Day fireworks that coincide with the town’s 175th anniversary celebration.
City clerk Joy Messer said last week the city has raised $2,285 for the fireworks, and hopes to raise $5,000. The junior chamber of commerce, or Jaycees, was in charge of collecting money for the fireworks and setting them off. However, the group disbanded a few years ago, leaving the responsibility for the nighttime display to the Van Buren County Jaycees. The city traditionally gives $1,000 from its Local Option Sales Tax and the Jaycees typically raised a few thousand more. Messer said the city wants to put on an especially good show this year because of the 175th anniversary.
