Class 1A baseball playoff brackets released
Van Buren racked up two more wins on the baseball diamond Wednesday as the squad marches toward another playoff run.
The Class 1A No. 4 Warriors (25-2) defeated Davis County in both games of a doubleheader in Keosauqua.
The final score of game one was 7-4. The Mustangs (9-16) led 3-2 until Van Buren racked up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cleanup hitter Robert Barker went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Garrett Saunders ripped two doubles and scored twice. Will Mertens and Brandon Plecker each drove in a run also.
Tyson Sprouse went 6 1/3 innings on the mound and struck out three. Sprouse, who allowed eight hits, two walks and three earned runs, got into trouble in the seventh and was pulled for Saunders, who closed out the game.
Game two turned into a blowout after the Warriors put up eight runs in the third inning, propelling them to a 17-7 win.
Noah Whitten went 3-4 at the plate with a double, a run scored and four RBIs. Mertens hit two doubles and scored twice. Sprouse scored four times.
With a SEISC-South title in the bag, Van Buren will soon turn its gaze to postseason play. The Warriors are the top seed in Class 1A district 10, and therefore get to play Harmony (1-16) in the first round. After Harmony, a potential matchup against either New London or Holy Trinity Catholic awaits. Both of these games will be played in Keosauqua.
The Panthers (14-4) will play July 15 against the winner of Keota vs. Sigourney. Keota is winless on the season, while Sigourney has won just four contests. Presuming the Panthers will win, Pekin will have the shot to play against IMS or English Valleys. Both of Pekin’s first two playoff games will be played in Packwood. North Mahaska, Tri-County, Lynnville-Sully and Montezuma each represent a possible district championship matchup.
A substate matchup between Pekin and Van Buren (like there was during basketball season) is not possible. The winner of district 10 plays the winner of district 9, while 11 plays 12.
