Comets knocked out by Rockets
The Cardinal High School baseball team was eliminated in the first round of the Class 2A district playoffs Monday at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
The Rockets won the game 12-1. EBF scored five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.
EBF (13-21) pitcher Taylor Swartz frustrated Cardinal hitters and allowed just three runs. Swartz struck out eight Comets.
“Swartz had a very good change up which kept us off balance,” Cardinal coach Tom Hallgren said. “Not only was it effective, but he threw a lot of strikes with all of his pitches.”
Quinn Honomichl singled and drove in Brandon Potts in the second inning for Cardinal’s only run. Cody Streeby also got a hit for the Comets.
Arm discomfort for Cardinal starting pitcher Brennon Elder hurt his command early in the game. He allowed two earned runs and struck out seven batters through three innings of work.
The Comets end the season 10-17. The season was highlighted by a five-game winning streak early on in the year that included wins over Holy Trinity, New London and Central Lee.
EBF moves on to play Davis County tonight in the district semifinals.
