Davisson claims title; Vogel earns 100th win
IOWA CITY — Seth Davisson won his second tournament of the season Saturday, leading Fairfield to a fifth-place finish (119 points) in the Iowa City Regina tournament.
Mount Vernon won the 12-team tournament with a score of 224. West Branch was second with 204 points and Maquoketa Valley finished third at 156.
Davisson rolled off two wins in a row at 182 pounds for the title. The senior Trojan pinned Pekin’s Thomas Slaney in 55 seconds, and he earned a 6-3 decision in the championship match.
Fairfield’s Ammon Shaner and Jake Mineart also made the championship round but settled for second, and Dalton McCarroll impressed with a third-place finish.
“Dalton had a really good tournament. The way he was wrestling, he looked capable of being in the finals this weekend,” Fairfield head coach Steve Miller said.
The Trojans have one more meet scheduled at home Tuesday before the holiday break, and Miller is hoping the community shows its support.
“There were plenty of available seats in our last home meet, so it would be nice to see some of those seats filled,” said Miller. “It’d be nice to have that ‘12th’ or ‘13th man’ sitting in the crowd, and I think a big crowd could give the kids some inspiration.”
Fairfield will take on Albia and Oskaloosa Tuesday. Start time is approximately 6 p.m.

Wrestling in front of brothers Ryan and Andy Vogel, both of whom eclipsed 100 wins at Pekin, Vogel earned the milestone victory with a 16-6 major decision vs. Gevock.
“It was good to get that accomplishment out of the way,” said Pekin head coach Al Chapman. “Austyn’s next goal is to surpass Andy at our home meet Jan. 3.”
Also for Pekin, Slaney and Chase Earnest earned two wins apiece. Slaney finished fourth and Earnest took fifth.
Pekin is off until a home double-dual Jan. 3 against Cardinal and Davis County.
