Davisson, Shaner lead Trojan wrestlers Saturday
MANCHESTER — Fairfield senior Seth Davisson went undefeated Saturday en route to the 182-pound title at the West Delaware Hawk Invitational.
Davisson’s three wins scored 24 points for the Fairfield wrestling team, which ended up fifth place out of eight teams in the annual, tough-as-nails tournament. Fairfield scored 92 points with only seven wrestlers making the trip, while West Delaware won their own tournament with 250 points. Davenport Assumption was runner-up (239.5) and Linn Mar placed third (235.5).
Davisson, the No. 5 ranked wrestler at 170 pounds in Class 2A, claimed the 182 title by pinning Decorah’s Peter Kephart in 2:33. The senior also won a 9-4 decision over Assumption’s Gabriel Rangel in the semifinal round after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals. Davisson finished second at the tournament last season.
Fairfield’s Ammon Shaner also made the championship match at 138 pounds, but the senior fell to Assumption’s Eric Clarke by a 13-5 major decision and settled for second. Prior to the loss, Shaner had beaten Decorah’s Kennedy Folkedahl by fall in 3:03 and won a 13-2 major decision against Nick Kramer of Decorah.
Aaron Gevock placed third and grabbed another 14 points for Fairfield at 145 pounds. Gevock lost a 5-2 decision to Joel Northrup of Linn Mar in the semifinals, but he reeled off two straight victories, capped by a 17-11 decision over Marion’s Levi Lochner in the third-place match. Gevock beat Lochner earlier in the day with a 20-8 major decision, and he also scored an 11-3 major decision vs. West Delaware’s Ryan Soppe.
Fairfield’s 195-pounder Brett Scott and 220-pound wrestler Jake Mineart claimed a pair of fourth-place finishes. Scott was 1-2 on the day and Mineart had a 2-2 tournament mark.
At 160 pounds, Fairfield’s Bryce Lunsford placed fifth with a pair of victories. Justin Leonard ended up sixth in the 152 class.
