December art walk features Gingerbread Extravaganza
Continuing a Fairfield holiday tradition, Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk, the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Fairfield Art Association have once again partnered to present the Gingerbread Extravaganza as the centerpiece for the Friday art walk.
Events are well underway with the building of 36 gingerbread houses by Fairfield Hy-Vee Bakery Department and Fairfield High Schools food classes. Then artists, volunteers and students decorated those houses that were sold to benefit 1st Fridays Art Walk, Fairfield Art Association and the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce. The houses will be on display for the December art walk in businesses around the square and other prominent locations.
In addition to these holiday “homes,” all of the entries in the gingerbread house contest will be on display during the art walk.
During art walk, Santa will be in his Kandy Kane House on the northeast corner of Central Park giving out candy canes and taking Christmas letters and hearing wishes.
The Fairfield Public Library will have a “winter campfire” story time from 6-8:30 p.m. in the meeting room. Everyone is welcome to bring a pillow, blanket or even come in pajamas and sit around the special indoor campfire to hear Youth Services Librarian Afton Hallauer read unique and entertaining stories centering on winter celebrations of many cultures.
The art walk also offers children’s Christmas cookie decorating, horse- drawn carriage rides, strolling carolers and Central Park decked out for the season.
