Annual Farm Barbecue set Thursday

The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce invites area farmers to the chamber’s 51st Annual Farm Barbecue at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

Chamber board of directors, chamber Ambassadors and chamber member volunteers will be serving pork chops provided and grilled by the Jefferson County Pork Producers and all the fixins’ prepared by Fairfield Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store.

The barbecue is an annual appreciation event to honor the county agriculture producers, their spouses and children with a free supper in recognition of their contributions to the community.

John Whitaker, Iowa State Farm Service Agency executive director, will be the keynote speaker.

Whitaker will touch of a variety of topics including: the Agricultural Act of 2014 signed into law Feb. 7 by President Obama; and an explanation of the basic programs for farmers contained in the law, the timeline for implementation, and what producers need to do and when.

Whitaker, appointed by Obama in the summer of 2009, oversees the delivery of federal farm programs as enacted by Congress. The programs include disaster assistance, conservation, commodity and price support programs and farm loans. The programs are designed to improve the economic stability of the agricultural industry and help farmers adjust production to meet demand. The programs are delivered by 100 local county offices throughout Iowa.

For information about the event, call the chamber at 472-2111 or visit its website at www.fairfieldiowa.com.
