DNR lists Iowa’s bald eagle watch opportunities
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has listed 2014 bald eagle watch events planned January through March.
The events marked with asterisk have a school day on Friday.
The Clinton Bald Eagle Watch is set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 4. Events include: Outdoor viewing at Lock and Dam 13; a live bird and nature programs from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clinton Community College; exhibits from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clinton Community College. A free bus service will be provided from the college to the outdoor viewing area. For information, call 815-259-3628.
Mississippi River Visitor Center, Arsenal Island, Rock Island, Ill., will have combined eagle watch and historic clock tower tours from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays Jan. 11 through Feb. 15. *Quad Cities Bald Eagle Days are 4-8 p.m. Jan. 10, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 11 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 12 at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island, Ill. The World Bird Sanctuary will present live eagle and bird of prey programs. Special attractions will include a wildlife art show and sale and an environmental fair. The Ottumwa Bald Eagle Watch is set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Bridge View Center on the Des Moines River. For information, call 641- 684-4303.
*Dubuque Bald Eagle Watch is set for Jan. 18. Outdoor viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. south of Lock and Dam 11, A.Y. McDonald Park. Live eagle and bird of prey programs will be given by The World Bird Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Indoor exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Grand River Center - Port of Dubuque. *Keokuk Bald Eagle Days are set for Jan. 17-19. Indoor programs and an environmental fair are planned at the River City Mall. The live eagles programs will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 18 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 19. Outdoor viewing will be along the river front. For information, call 800-383-1219.
The Coralville Bald Eagle Watch is planned Feb. 8. Outdoor viewing will be at Tailwater West Picnic Shelter downstream from the dam at Coralville Lake. Indoor programs will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Central Junior High in North Liberty. For information, call 319-338-3543 ext. 6308.
Des Moines Parks and Rec will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Bald Eagle Watch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at the replica eagle nest at Grays Lake in Des Moines. Indoor viewing of a live eagle will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Sixth Street bridge. For information, call 515-283-4294.

The Saylorville Bald Eagle Watch is set from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23. Outdoor viewing will be available at selected sites around the reservoir; start at the visitors’ center. For information, call 515-276-4656.
O’Brien County Bald Eagle Watch is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 1 at the Prairie Heritage Center in Peterson. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be available. Sioux Rapids will have an event March 22 at the American Legion Building. Registration is from 8:30-10 a.m. Speakers are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. Refreshments will be served in the morning.
