Driving record available online

Oct 29, 2012

AMES – The Iowa Department of Transportation wants to save you a trip to the driver’s license station; now, you can get a certified abstract of your driver’s record online, in addition to several other driver services.

A certified abstract of your driver’s record includes your personal information (i.e., name, address, date of birth, and driver’s license or identification number; but, not your Social Security number); status of your driver’s license (and commercial driver’s license, if you have one); any restrictions and endorsements; and other pertinent information. It also includes your Iowa driving history, including convictions, suspensions, reinstatements, etc.

A $7 fee ($5.50 record fee and $1.50 online processing fee) is required to obtain a certified abstract of your driver’s record. Debit and credit cards are accepted. It is only necessary to purchase a certified copy when you need to provide certified proof of your driving record to another person or party, such as an insurer or employer.

If you simply want to view your Iowa driving history or print a noncertified copy, you can do that online for free. Maybe you are curious about how many speeding tickets are on your record or the date when you are eligible to get your driver’s license back if it has been suspended. Your driving history will provide that type of information.

In addition to your driving record, the Iowa D.O.T. offers other online driver services through the “myMVD” website at: https://mymvd.iowadot.gov/Account/Login

• Sign up for an electronic reminder notice that will be emailed to you when it is nearing time for your driver’s license to be renewed.

• Change the mailing address in your driving record so you receive information that is mailed to driver’s license holders or vehicle owners. (This does not result in issuance of a replacement driver’s license with the new address. You must visit a driver’s license issuance site to do that.) Using this option satisfies the legal requirement that you must notify the Iowa DOT if your mailing address changes.

To use the myMVD website you must enter the following information, which ensures that only you are able to access your record.

• First and last names

• Date of birth

• Last five digits of your Social Security number

• Iowa driver’s license or nonoperator identification card number

The Iowa D.O.T. is continuing to work on development of other online services that will make it easier for customers to access services, when it is convenient for them. Announcements will be made when these services are available.
