Eagle Watch planned Saturday in Ottumwa
OTTUMWA – The Wapello County Trails Council is hoping for colder weather to arrive to bring more eagles to the Des Moines River in time for the Eighth Annual Eagle Watch.
The event, a celebration of the eagles that make Ottumwa their home during the winter, will be held Saturday at Bridge View Center in Ottumwa.
Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and will continue through 2 p.m. Celebrate Ottumwa’s spectacular eagles in residence, hike along the river trail, learn about birds of prey and view works by local photographers on exhibit. More than 20 exhibitors will have displays, including a live eagle and Girl Scout cookies.
All event activities are free to the public.
A hike led by the local trails council begins at 8:45 a.m. Viewing scopes will be available inside Bridge View Center. Bring your cameras to capture the eagles perched along the trail, feeding along the levee or flying over the Des Moines River.
The eighth annual photo competition, sponsored by The Photo Shop and Hy-Vee Drug Store, is on display through Saturday in the Bridge View Center lobby. Area residents are competing for prizes in five categories, including eagles, barns, black and white, open division and youth division.
Winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m.
